Crohn’s & Colitis NZ
Generating a case for law change
Porter Novelli worked with gastroenterologist Dr Richard Stein to achieve awareness of a Crohn’s & Colitis NZ petition to Parliament aimed at giving those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), undeniable access to workplace toilets. People with these diseases can suffer excruciating abdominal pain, diarrhoea and bleeding which can be incredibly stressful and embarrassing when away from home. This petition was about making being out and about easier for people with IBD.
With less than a week to plan and generate media interest for this incredibly important awareness-raising initiative we put our all into it.
Just a few days later inside Parliament, Dr Stein and 12-year-old Nicole Thornton were surrounded by media and welcomed by MPs Annette King and sponsor Trevor Mallard.
The 33 media items we secured, including 1 News, Newshub, Newstalk ZB, Radio Live and an interview on Radio NZ Checkpoint, helped generate more than 3,500 petition signatures and in the words of Dr Stein:
“When Nicole and I walked down parliament steps we were greeted by seven television cameras and a host of reporters. Thanks to the work you’ve done and your expertise with the media, I am convinced that most people in NZ are now aware of these diseases which were largely unheard of prior to your campaign.”
